Archive for February, 2011

I think I left off with Saturday afternoon.  For some reason I was in an aweful mood.  I did NOT want to go to the dojo to work out.  But I was a good girl, and I really want my purple belt (which Sensei says I will earn at the end of this 12 week exercise program), and I went.  It’s amazing what a little movement can do to a bad mood.  By the end I wasn’t happy, but I was feeling better.  And then I took up the subarito, or heavy wooden sword.  As I was going through my 8 point kata and started to feel the fatigue in my arms, I realized that my mood was connected to a dream I had had that morning.  Once I realized who it was about and why I had had it, it was like I had walked outside to a day of sunshine and warm breezes.

Dinner – Po’ Boys for dinner.  A few spoonfuls of Michaels’ gumbo, shrimp creole, which was pretty good for me except for the delicious grits that had lots of creamy cheesiness.  I had a Yeungling Porter and a glass of water to drink.  Oh, and we shared a piece of pecan pie for dessert.

Sunday

Breakfast – chobani yogurt, of course!  Then it was off to Hot Yoga, which was awesome.  I sweated so much, I couldn’t hold my knee to my chest in “wind releasing pose.”  And, yes, it’s to get all the gasses out of your intestine, though not until after you leave the enclosed room!

Lunch – I was on my way back from yoga and had a hankering (yes, I use that word) for something sweet.  So I stopped at the bakery in Paynter’s Mill, and it was closed.  So I went to Vintage Cafe in town, and it was closed for remodeling!  I ended up going to Food Lion (not my favorite place) and getting eggs, goat cheese, chives, and eclairs.  I made an egg white, goatcheese, and chive wrap with a whole wheat tortilla we already had.  Oh, and I had an eclair.  What can I say?  I needed something sweet!

Dinner – We had some friends over for dinner last night, and I made baked ziti with hot Italian sausage and mushrooms, with garlic bread on the side.  Christine brought a very colorful salad, which was really tasty.  I had one glass of wine and a little bit of the DFH Poppaskull, which was really good.  I don’t know what it was exactly, but it tasted like mead.

Dessert – I made baked apples and pears with what was supposed to be a crumble, but I always add too much water and it turns into little drops of dough instead.  I had quite a bit of that, since I finished it off after everyone left, but I only had 1 scoop of ice cream.

Today – starting off well with 25 reps of each exercise.  Weird pop in my left hip, though.  Not good.  Guess what I’m having for breakfast!  That’s right, boys and girls!  Chobani yogurt!

Off to work.  Have a good day, everyone!

Thursday was not a good day for eating.  I was good and brought a yogurt with me to school.  However, the glazed doughnuts were calling my name all day.

Breakfast – Chobani yogurt, coffee, 1, maybe 2 doughnuts

Lunch – Spaghetti and Meatballs from Pizza Palace.  Their meatballs are really good, but the pasta and sauce were only so-so that day.  Ate what I needed to, and the rest fell to the ground in parking lot as I tried to hand it off to my student so I could drive.  Oops!  Oh, and a bottle of water.

Snack – Garlic break left over from my lunch

Dinner – 3 glazed doughnuts at the concert.  I made the mistake of calling a parent in the 10 minutes I had to change, eat, and brush my teeth.  I got to change, and chew some gum.

Late night dinner – Gus got his Yellow Belt at class on Thursday, so I wasn’t surprised when Michael wasn’t home when I got home from the County Band concert.  Drove down to Irish Eyes to find Gus, Chris, and Michael having some wings and drinks.  I was still very hungry, so I had a corned beef reuben, 3 or 4 potato chips, 2 hot wings, and a Yeungling.  Like I said, not a good eating day for me.

Friday

Breakfast – Michael was nice and made me some oatmeal.  Thank you, my love!

Lunch – a quick bite of quiche and salad from my friend Christina.

Snack – I didn’t have time!  The band and chorus sponsored a dance Friday, DJ’ed by Chris (thank you!).  Unfortunately, the computer kept crashing so I spent the entire dance picking songs from CD’s and didn’t have time to enjoy any of the goodies at the bake sale table.

Dinner – I came home to Michael preparing dinner!  Chicken breasts, sweet potatoes, and salad.  A nice glass of wine went with that, too.

Dessert – Weight Watcher’s Extra Large Fudgecicle.  They’re only 1 WW point!  Not that I’m counting points, but that means it satisfied my chocolate craving with very few calories or fat.

Today

Breakfast – I made a fritata for breakfast.  It had chicken, red pepper, tomatoes, cheese, and of course eggs.  It was pretty good, high in protein, and not too bad for me, either.

Lunch – The pageant provided lunch from Cassapula’s.  I had turkey sandwich, a few chips, and 2 cookies with water . . . and then a 2nd sandwich because I didn’t know they had the Turkey Stuffer.  That’s turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayo.  I did eat a couple bites of macaroni salad, but not a lot, and a few little pieces of chocolate.  If I hadn’t had the 2nd sandwich, I would have done really well.

Well, I’m supposed to go do today’s part of my workout routine.  I am definitely a morning workout person, because I am totally dragging my feet with this.  But it’s good for me.  I need to go work off that Turkey Stuffer!

I was at the gym yesterday (Friday 25, Feb) and was working on the punching bag. I had a nice surprise of an older gentleman who approached me and asked if he could work the bag with me. I said he certainly could and he rummaged through his gym bag and produced a pair of mixed martial arts gloves. He stuck his hand out and said ” my name is Joe, I am 72 years old and I hold a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do” he then proceeded to punch and lightly kick the bag while I spotted him. We spoke about martial arts, training and keeping mentally and physically fit. He appreciated my holding the bag for him but cheerfully informed me that he would not hold the bag for me!!! ” A little too young and strong for me boy….” was his reply. What an honor and truly an awesome experience to work out with this gentleman. No doubt I will see him again striking that bag and lifting the old irons.  I hope to be that fit and agile when I am his age. Just another reason to keep training, keep moving and to always improve and always evolve.

Had an excellent morning at the dojo! We welcomed our newest arrival, Jacob to the dojo and he will be with us on a semi-private basis until his parents feel ready to have him move to the regular classes. A special thanks to Squire Ramon Durst for a very spirited workout on the striking bag and focus pads. Ramon had the chance to throw Sensei in real-time with a wrist lock while Sensei did the same (lightly) with him so that he could appreciate and “receive” the technique he was taught. Keep it up Ramon, remember your art begins and ends with RESPECT on and off the mat and ALWAYS at home.

Hello, everyone.  Michael has asked me to blog my daily food journal instead of just writing it down, and I’m already falling behind.  I started a 12 week program designed by Grandmaster Kemmerlin on Monday, and should have been blogging as of that night, but I’m sure you know how crazy a week can get.  I’m behind on an on-line class, I had a concert on Thursday, a dance on Friday, oh yeah, and Martial Arts Tuesday and Wednesday.  Let me try to recreate my food intake day by day.

Monday

Breakfast – I think Michael made breakfast sandwiches.  One egg and 2 slices of bacon on a sandwich flat bread thingy.

Lunch – We had breakfast late, and I was planning on making dinner kind of early, so I didn’t eat anything.

Dinner – Shoot, I can’t remember.  But I know I had a Tootsie Pop earlier in the day.

Tuesday

Breakfast – Chobani yogurt.  We LOVE this stuff in our house.  Apparently we’re not the only ones, though.  The selection at our local Food Lion has increased dramatically in the last month.  Most of them are fat free, but my favorite is the pineapple, which of course is not fat free.  I think I had the strawberry banana, which is also not fat free, but only has 3 grams of fat so that’s not bad at all for a breakfast.

Lunch – at school, Chicken Poppers, honey mustard, broccoli, peaches, a roll, and iced tea.  They always overcook the veggies.  Yuck.

Snack – Pecan Crunch granola bars in between one of our young one’s yellow belt test and adult class

Dinner – Was this the night Michael made me an awesome turkey and avacado sandwich?  I think that may have been Wednesday.

Wednesday

Breakfast – 2 doughnuts, 2 cups of coffee – not a good start!  I was at County Band practice and had forgotten to grab a yogurt.

Lunch – I had promised my students who made it into County Band that I would buy them lunch on the days we were at Sussex Central.  They chose pizza.  Scarfed down 2 large slices of ham and pineapple, but I did choose a bottle of water instead of more coffee or a soda.

Snack – another Nature Valley granola bars packet inbetween classes.  I had to be ready for my girls night with Nicki!

Dinner – Yeah, this was the night that was supposed to be chicken tenders and salad, but the chicken was rotten (Yay Food Lion :P).  Michael made turkey sandwhiches instead.  I wonder what we ate on Tuesday.  Oh, and we had a cooked pair drizzled with honey and cinnamon for dessert.

I’ll have to finish this up in a little bit.  I’m going to go judge a beauty pageant today and need to be there soon!

Breakfast – Chobani yogurt.  We LOVE this stuff in the Chamberland household.  Apparently we’re not the only ones,

I just got back from H.O. Brittingham Elementary as a guest with the Delaware B.I.E. I got to work with seven groups of fifth graders on how martial arts relates to science. Showing how to use proper bone alignment, muscular structure and breathing, each student got to see how much power the could generate when striking a focus pad. What an awesome group of kids!!!!!! I worked up a sweat and wore a few of them out.  So nice to be in the community and provide this experience.

A Note on Teaching and Entertaining.

I once heard someone say his job was to teach and not entertain. Hmm…..what kind of teaching would that be really? I consider myself an entertainer to a large degree especially for the childrens classes. It ignites energy, keeps the group moving, demonstrates and instills passion and clears the message you hope to send. Want  to get something done? Put on a brave face and have a go at bringing some theater into your passions. You never know what rewards may come with a spirited performance.

A Healthy Challenge………

Beginning on 2/28/11 we are embarking upon a personal quest to spend each day truly experiencing and appreciating our food. Savor Mindful Eating, Mindful Life will be available through The EDGE Martial Arts Academy as a guide while we spend each day writing down every morsel we swallow. Lets work on experience and mindful living rather than consumption and absence of connection.

Lets see where this journey takes us. Are you ready?

Enter the Hero

I am looking forward to our dojo presentation of each Hero project. Last month, I asked each student to write, paint, sculpt, draw, color or build something that reflects who their hero or heroes are. I am so excited to see what comes back!!! After the presentations, we will enjoy some pizza and beverages and talk about the next phase in our project.  Please join us this Saturday at 2pm at the Milton Fire Hall third floor.
